Subject: Rivals
You’ll know by now the details of my meeting
with Bill while drinking after baseball-play.
His version no-doubt makes it sound quite fleeting,
as if we simply passed the time of day.
I have to say he seems a decent sort,
and under other skies we might be friends,
although he’s somewhat boring, and reports
in far too much detail how he attends
some church or other where the single point
is to give help to the helpless in their plight:
a worthy goal, humanity anoints
such warriors of virtue and of right.
But in this world the two of us are rivals:
your love’s the key to both our joy’s survival.
