Subject: New Year’s Eve
The phases of the year are arbitrary:
it used to start upon each Lady Day
that in mid-March announced that Winter’s weary,
and finally it is passing on it’s way.
But then the calendar reformed and skipped
two weeks in fall, and then upset the year,
the new beginning into Winter slipped
uprooting old traditions, long held dear.
So too the day, now measured out by clocks
began at midnight, not waiting on the sun
to reach the zenith, shot by men in frocks,
the rule of nature’s sky was finally done.
Although this day is meaningless to me
I’d rather I was spending it with thee.
